Hundreds of women are among country’s newly rich Gone are the days when a woman’s only path to wealth was a good marriage or inheritance — now women make up a third of South Africa’s 5703 new dollar millionaires . Bold business ventures in property development, financial services, mining, retail and franchising grew women’s bank balances, investments and salaries last year. The new-entry list boosts the number of dollar millionaires in South Africa — those worth over R7-million — to 48586, according to the 2007 World Wealth Report, which monitors the super-rich in 71 countries. “The growth of dollar millionaires was particularly strong last year in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America ... outpacing developed nations,” said Jonathan Blank, spokesman for Capgemini, which compiled the report with Merrill Lynch. The report shows the number of South Africa’s super-rich has almost doubled since 2004, when there were fewer than 25000 who made the cut.
